Presenter: Good afternoon, everybody, and welcome to our weekly programme about sports and sportsmen. Today in our studio we have Tom Peary, a bodybuilder. Hello, Tom.
Tom: Good afternoon, everybody. It's a pleasure to be here.
Presenter: Food is very important for sportsmen. Our listeners would certainly love to know about your diet.
Tom: Regarding my diet, I have recently gone with a more organic approach. If I can buy organic, then organic it is — well, at least for the most part. Also, for the past year and a half, I have excluded gluten from my diet as much as possible, and I think that's the main reason for my latest gains with bodybuilding. The elimination of gluten has actually helped me put on more lean mass by eating more protein, veggies and fruit. For anyone who has a hard time keeping weight on or who wants to gain lean mass, you should give it a try. I have gone from eating just two or three times a day to an average of five or six times a day.
Presenter: How is it different from your diet at the beginning of your career?
Tom: When I was young, I used to eat whatever I liked. But at the age of 27, I started to be stricter with my diet. I cut out fast food and fried food, cut back on soda consumption and made healthier choices when dining out. So nothing too dramatic. I followed this approach Monday through Friday, but relaxed a bit on the weekends with foods I really enjoyed. However, I wouldn't recommend this to everybody. You can do it only when you are young.
Presenter: What do you love about bodybuilding?
Tom: For me, bodybuilding is like a competition with myself. I want to push my body to its limits. I love feeling my muscles grow and become more defined. I love feeling the pump my muscles get when they stretch out my gym shirt. I love the endorphin high I get while lifting weights. It's most definitely a mood-enhancing rush that can't be matched.
Presenter: What keeps you motivated?
Tom: Staying motivated always leads back to my childhood, as a kid growing up in the 80s. My initial inspiration then was knowing what I wanted to look like and become when I grew up. And that's always going to be with me. Even to this day, I think about it all the time, even when I'm lifting. I have always wanted to be fit and to get better. Seeing the gains over the years, even the short-term ones, and being featured in fitness publications, all of these things motivate me to go back to the gym for my next workout.
Presenter: What made you decide to enter your first competition?
Tom: Through all my years of training, I never really thought of entering a competition, nor did I want to. It wasn't until connecting with a few of the top bodybuilding supplement companies that I knew I had to get up on the stage if I wanted them to sponsor me. My first competition was a crash and burn experience. It most definitely was a great learning experience, and I looked forward to improving the next summer.
Presenter: What are your most important training tips?
Tom: Just go to the gym and work out. There are thousands of routines that claim to be the next best thing, and I see people who are constantly changing their current regime in order to try different ones. Give your current routine a chance to work. Nothing good is going to happen overnight. There's always going to be some sort of struggle before seeing a good result. Stay true to your workout schedule and don't skip days. Take days off only when you're ill or injured. They're sure to happen. Trust me, it comes with the territory.
Presenter: Thank you, Tom. It's been very interesting talking to you.
Tom: Thank you.
