The oceans cover most of our planet and play an important role in maintaining life on Earth. They influence weather, store heat and provide a home for millions of living organisms. Scientists have explored only a small part of the underwater world because many areas are difficult to reach. In 1958, researchers began using special equipment to study deep ocean environments. Some ocean creatures can survive under extreme pressure and in temperatures close to 2 degrees Celsius. Marine scientists believe that there are still many unknown species waiting to be discovered. Protecting oceans from pollution is one of the main environmental challenges today because healthy seas are necessary for the future of our planet.
