- A person who always tries to find a middle ground and make concessions.
- Someone who suffers from severe anxiety due to being ignored by peers.
- A person who tends to exaggerate small problems and create huge scandals.
- Someone who actively defends their friends when they are treated unfairly.
- A person who refuses to forget past offenses and stays angry for a long time.
- Someone who prefers to avoid discussing painful topics and isolates themselves.
- A person who believes that physical confrontation is the only way to solve problems.
A. I always try to meet someone halfway during arguments. I believe that we can easily reach a compromise if we listen actively to each other and show mutual understanding.
B. My classmates often use social exclusion against me. This cruel bullying causes deep psychological distress and severe anxiety before attending school every day.
C. My sister tends to blow things out of proportion over trivial things. Our silly argument was just a storm in a teacup, but she lashed out at everyone and ruffled their feathers.
D. I will always stand up for my best friend if someone treats her unfairly. I hate prejudice and I will mediate a conflict if necessary to protect her from social isolation.
E. I still hold a grudge against him for his rude behavior. I cannot forgive him and I refuse to bury the hatchet right now because he didn’t apologize sincerely.
F. When we have problems, I tend to shut out my family. I don’t want them to bring up that painful topic again, so I just stay in my room to calm down.
Ответ: A — 1, B — 2, C — 3, D — 4, E — 5, F — 6.
How do you usually resolve conflicts with your friends? What do you think is the main cause of teenage arguments? Do you prefer to talk over a problem immediately or wait for a while?
Dear Ben,
Thanks for your recent email. I’m really glad you’re interested in this topic.
To resolve conflicts, I usually try to clear the air and talk over any issues calmly. If we fall out over something silly, we make up quickly since we see eye to eye. We try not to blow things out of proportion and always patch things up.
The main causes of teenage arguments are peer pressure and simple misunderstandings. Jealousy often makes teens lock horns and spread malicious gossip.
Personally, I prefer to calm down first so I don’t lash out and cause emotional trauma.
Have you ever had to mediate a conflict? Is it easy to bury the hatchet? Who helps you smooth things over?
Write back soon!
Best wishes,
Сначала возникает яблоко раздора (a bone of contention), которое вызывает недопонимание (misunderstanding). Затем они решают прояснить ситуацию (clear the air), приходят к компромиссу (reach a compromise) и в итоге мирятся (make up).
If both sides make small concessions, they will easily ___ a compromise.
- make
- reach
- do
- take

A simple ___ can easily ruin a strong friendship if you do not explain your intentions clearly. (UNDERSTAND)
