Acid rain is a serious environmental problem these days. Basically, we have acid rain when water in the atmosphere mixes with dangerous gases and then falls onto the ground. It can fall as rain, snow, dust or even fog. When it comes into contact with animals, plants and even buildings or cars, it does a lot of harm to them. It also damages the soil. If it gets into a river or a lake, water creatures there suffer, too.
It is obvious that acid rain is caused by air pollution. Factories and plants send smoke into the air. People burn fossil fuels to produce energy. They also drive their cars or use public transport instead of using their bikes or walking. Sometimes acid rain happens because of volcanic activity or other natural causes, but in most cases, it is man-made. We should consider our environmental footprint seriously and start doing everything we can to stop acid rain.

A polar bear walks along a rocky shore, looking for food. The bear would usually be on the sea ice hunting for seals, pouncing when the seal comes up to breathe. But the ice has started to melt earlier and re-form later than it was in the past. Without the sea ice, the polar bear must scavenge for other, less nutritious food. These changes in polar sea ice are a result of climate change. But this isn't just affecting polar bears — climate change affects everyone.
Changes in Earth's climate are caused by how much of the Sun's energy is absorbed by the atmosphere. In fact, over the past 650,000 years, our planet has gone through seven ice ages and warming periods. But during the past few hundred years, oil, gas, and coal have powered homes, cars, and factories. That increases Earth's temperature, which contributes to the planet's warming.

The Altai Mountains are located in Russia on the border with Mongolia, Kazakhstan and China. They are considered one of the most beautiful mountain ranges in Russia. The panoramic views from the mountain tops are impossible to forget. The colour palette of the landscape changes greatly with each season so you will never get tired of it.
What makes the Altai Mountains even more attractive is that they are not easy to get to. In the past, Old Believers sought safety in this hard-to-reach area and built small villages that were hidden from officials and outsiders.
Today visitors still feel like they are the first to see this wild landscape that has stayed untouched so far. To support this impression and make trips to the mountains unforgettable, several eco-lodges will be built in the near future to accommodate nature lovers.

Something that may be available for everyone is artificial intelligence. Already more advanced than most of the innovations mentioned here, the development of artificial intelligence will only get better through the years. Experts in the field believe that AI will surpass the processing power of living brains. That wouldn't be scary if it didn't open the door to the Robo-pocalypse. Luckily, scientists still have to figure out how to impart all the important human values into an AI before it can become a part of our everyday life. But the rise of AI will, of course, change the face of the workforce. Not only that, but the job market will also face radical change, and with the way things are going, about half of the world's current jobs will be extinct, taken over by AI machines and robots. In 2050, the world will be more interconnected and even more driven by data than it is now. Some of us will definitely need to consider a career change.

Arctic foxes are well-adapted to survive in the frigid Arctic regions, both on land and sea ice within the Arctic Circle. The winters in the Arctic differ greatly from those in other parts of the world, with October to February being characterized by the absence of sunlight and its warmth.
Fortunately, these small foxes possess remarkable adaptations that aid their survival in the icy environment. Their long and fluffy tails serve as natural blankets, providing insulation and keeping the foxes warm when they wrap their tails around their bodies while sleeping. Additionally, their feet are equipped with a layer of thick fur, acting as built-in snow boots that muffle their footsteps, making it challenging for prey to detect them. Furthermore, their white coats serve as effective camouflage amidst the ice and snow, making it difficult for predators like wolves, polar bears, and golden eagles to spot them.

Polar regions are often dark with freezing winds, and they receive little rain. Only the toughest can survive in such unwelcoming conditions. Polar animals have developed various mechanisms to protect themselves from the harsh climate. Penguins, for instance, huddle together to stay warm. The ones on the outside of the huddle aren’t so well protected from the cold, so they take turns standing in the middle. A lot of animals have got thick coats or long feathers, like the snowy owl, whose feathers are long enough to cover its legs. Larger animals lose heat more slowly than smaller ones, so many Arctic animals are quite big. A male polar bear can weigh up to 800 kilos. It’s not only animals that need to wrap up warm – plants do too. They have a lot of tiny overlapping leaves that completely cover the short stem. Plants can also stop growing if it’s too cold and start growing again when the weather becomes better.

As the world's population grows, there will be less and less space available for housing. One solution for the future could be 'vertical villages'. These are buildings that have other purposes besides residential use. Designs exist for vertical villages that have shops, libraries and other facilities on the lower floors in a square-shaped base. On top of the base are apartments for 60 or 70 families, within a more traditional tower block shape. The plans for the vertical villages have been developed with families in mind. They include 'sky gardens', cafes and even swimming pools close to the apartments.
Making use of space in this way will have a huge impact on the way people live in cities. However, it will be a positive development because we will use urban spaces more efficiently and it will be better for the environment.

Culture shock is a feeling of disorientation that occurs when someone moves to an unfamiliar cultural environment. This common experience affects millions of travelers, students, and immigrants worldwide each year.
The process typically involves several stages. Initially, people experience excitement about the new culture. This "honeymoon phase" is followed by frustration and anxiety as differences become apparent. Simple tasks like shopping or using public transport can suddenly feel overwhelming.
Physical symptoms often include headaches, insomnia, and loss of appetite. Psychological effects may involve homesickness, irritability, and even depression. Many people withdraw socially during this adjustment period.
Fortunately, culture shock is temporary. Most individuals gradually adapt by learning local customs and building new relationships. Keeping an open mind, maintaining a sense of humor, and connecting with both locals and people from your home country can help overcome these challenges.
Understanding culture shock helps prepare travelers for these natural feelings, making cross-cultural experiences more rewarding in the long term.

Being with other people is definitely a key part of happiness. There is a broad agreement among happiness researchers and scientists that social relations are essential for people's happiness. Certainly, basic living standards are essential for well-being too. Still, after the baseline has been made, happiness varies more with quality of human relationships than income.
People have a basic need to feel connected with others, and close, caring bonds with other people play a major part in our motivation and behaviour. We are social creatures, and the importance of this is clearly seen when one compares the satisfaction people feel in relationships with their overall satisfaction with life. The most important social relationships appear to be the ones where you experience things together with others, sharing thoughts and feelings as well as giving and receiving support.

Trees may look silent and motionless, but underground they can be surprisingly well connected. Their roots are linked with fungi that form a huge network beneath the soil. These fungi can carry water and minerals to trees, while trees provide them with sugars made during photosynthesis. The network can also help plants exchange chemical signals. For example, when insects attack a tree, it may release substances that warn nearby plants about the danger. Some trees can then increase their natural defences before the insects reach them. Trees can also send resources through their underground connections. A large, healthy tree may provide nutrients to a younger plant growing in a shady place where it cannot produce enough food itself. Scientists are still studying how complex these interactions are, but one thing is clear: a forest is not simply a collection of separate trees. It is a living system in which plants, fungi and other organisms are closely connected.

Snowflakes are ice crystals which fall through the Earth’s atmosphere as snow. People like to think that every snowflake has a unique shape. However, it’s not true. While snowflakes may look different, they can still be classified into eight groups and about eighty different variants. Some scientists have done a lot of research into making a kind of a catalogue of snowflakes.
The most typical patterns for a snowflake are needles, columns, plates and rimes. The shape and the pattern of a snowflake largely depend on the weather conditions. The study of snowflakes has identified that long, thin needle-like ice crystals form at around zero, while a lower temperature will lead to very flat crystals. Further changes in temperature as a snowflake falls determine more complicated shapes of snowflakes. The size of a snowflake also depends on the air temperature.

During the dry season in the savanna, the only reliable place to find water is at a water hole. Thus, it can be a very busy place. Basically, a water hole is a pool or a depression in the ground in which water can collect. Animals visit a waterhole frequently, especially elephants, which have to drink about 200 litres of water a day. Oftentimes an animal leaves a water hole dirtier than ever. They try to cover themselves in the mud because it cools them down, and it may also help them to get rid of nasty insects that usually infect the animal’s skin. Sometimes larger animals are accompanied by small birds to a water hole. These birds hope to find insects on the animal’s skin. As well as insect control, such birds may also clean up any wounds the host animal may have. Thus, both host animals and birds are happy. In general, birds can often be seen wading in water holes, looking for fish and frogs.

There is nothing fancy or expensive about happiness. On the contrary, happiness is simple and slow. It means choosing peace and quiet over excitement. It is wearing your old pyjamas and watching a movie the day before Christmas. It is sitting in your window watching the weather while sipping your favourite tea on a rainy day. It is looking into the bonfire surrounded by your friends and family while your bread is slowly baking. Happiness is always about appreciating the simple pleasures in life and thus it can be achieved on a really low budget. You cannot buy the right atmosphere or a sense of togetherness. It’s all about time, interest and engagement in the people around you. Thus, happiness is an atmosphere which is not improved by spending more money on it, but rather, in some ways, the opposite. After all, the best things in life are absolutely free.

People have always wanted to discover new things and new worlds. We have built spaceships to go to other planets and are planning to visit other galaxies one day. Meanwhile, we know very little about our own planet. The oceans, which cover 70 percent of the planet, are an unknown world to us. The Pacific Ocean is the largest one. The lowest point on the Earth is also there. It is called Challenger Deep and it was discovered in 1875. The Pacific Ocean stretches from the Arctic Ocean to the coast of Antarctica, but most of its water is in the warm tropics, which makes it warm. A lot of fish and animals live in the Pacific Ocean. The place is still waiting for researchers to discover its secrets for us.

Without the energy from the Sun, the Earth would have no life at all. Nowadays everyone knows that the Sun is a star. Like all stars, the Sun is a great burning ball of gases. To us, it seems large and red. The other stars look white or light blue because they are much farther from us than the Sun. In the past, many people believed that the Earth was the centre of the universe. They thought that the Sun and the stars went round it. Only in 1543, a great Polish scientist published a book in which he tried to prove a different point of view. According to him, the Earth and the other planets moved round the Sun. Those people who supported the scientist were often imprisoned and even killed.

Since 2007 high-speed trains have become a common type of transport in Europe. They make it possible to cut travel times by hours. The trains travel at 350 kilometres an hour, and this is not the limit! The only problem for the engineers is the loud noise the trains produce. People living in the areas the trains travel through suffer from the noise greatly. For the passengers, the situation is different. For their comfort, all the carriages are made sound-proof from the inside. Travelling on high-speed trains is comfortable and pleasant. In the future, a high-speed railroad network could cover most of Europe. For example, a trip from Paris to Rome could take only 3 hours!

Netball is played by over 20 million people in more than 70 countries of the world. It was invented in 1892 as women’s basketball. However, netball is different from basketball in many ways. For example, the ball and the basket are smaller and the court is bigger. The players cannot run with the ball. They are not allowed to touch the players who they are playing with. Netball has seven players in each team (not five as in basketball). During the 20th century, the game became very popular in English-speaking countries. Traditionally, only girls and women played netball. Nowadays, netball is the number one women’s sport in the world but boys and men are starting to play it too.

Studies of the atmosphere first received technical support in 1912. Equipment to measure temperature and pressure was invented in Germany. But the question was how to raise it high into the air. In 1921, Russian engineers suggested using planes. The special equipment was put on planes that made regular flights. Thanks to this, scientists got a lot of new information about the structure of the atmosphere. Nowadays scientists use modern flying laboratories to study the structure of clouds at different levels. Unlike the first planes, these laboratories can work in any weather and are able to predict climate changes.

Most people enjoy watching the night sky. And the brightest object in the sky is the Moon. Every night the Moon rises in the East and sets in the West. It takes about 27 days to go around the Earth, and it’s an interesting fact that we always see the same side of the Moon. The Moon is the closest object to the Earth. It would take us only thirteen hours to get to the Moon by rocket. If we were able to travel at the speed of light, it would take a bit less than two seconds. There is a very thin atmosphere on the Moon. Life is not possible there. In spite of this, the Moon can be used as a base for space exploration and even for space tourism. Some space companies say that they will be able to take tourists to the Moon as soon as in 2023.

Table tennis is the third most played sport in the world after football and cricket. It is considered to be an indoor version of Lawn Tennis. However, they have a lot of differences. Table tennis has a different scoring system, a smaller ball, smaller rackets, and a smaller playing area. Modern table tennis was invented at the end of the 19 th century in England. Very soon the new sport became popular all over the world. In 1901, competitions with over 300 participants were already being held. According to numerous studies, table tennis has great effects on human health. It keeps the brain sharp and improves the player’s coordination.

A zoo, also known as a zoological park or a zoological garden, gives people the opportunity to watch animals from different continents. There are hundreds of zoos all over the world. However, most of them are located in major cities. The first zoo in Russia was opened in 1864, in Moscow. It was a small zoological garden. On the opening day, only 287 animals were on display. Nowadays, the Moscow Zoo is one of the largest in Europe. The unique collection of the Zoo includes over 8000 kinds of animals and birds. Scientists study the animals’ behavior and reproduction. They also breed rare animals there to stop them dying out.

The first vacuum cleaner was designed in 1869. Since then, vacuum cleaners have changed a lot. Nowadays the robot vacuum cleaner is getting more and more popular. This device cleans a house automatically. Following a programme, the robot drives slowly around the house and makes it cleaner. It operates with brushes and a tube. The robot is so flexible that it can get under a table or sofa or reach dust in corners. Some advanced models can also wash floors of all kinds. These functions are provided by a complicated electronic system and sensors inside. The vacuum cleaner looks like a plate and can be kept in the corner. It is friendly to children and animals and works on electricity.
